Lefkas is the vacationing place of hundreds of thousands of tourists year after year, and this has something to do with its Mediterranean climate and beautiful landscapes. Apart from that, there are also numerous activities to be done in this idyllic place. With its wide array of things to offer, Lefkas will surely leave no soul disappointed.
With a great number of beautiful beaches, this Greek island attracts swarms of tourists every summer. Two of the most famous ones are Porto Katsiki, accessible by the 347 steps sloping off the mountain, as well as the Egremni Beach, surrounded by cliffs which provide an intimate getaway to enjoy the crystal clear sea. These sandy beaches also have umbrellas, sun beds and beach bars and will certainly make the days spent there fly by in a moment. When visiting Lefkas, be sure to not forget to visit some of the mountainous and seaside villages. By visiting the more traditional villages across the island, you can experience the true Greek culture and see some types of architecture which are no longer used, but are still inhabited by the Greek people. This adds to the charm of the place, as building storey blocks is still banned by law. Some of the most popular villages include Agios Nikitas, Vasiliki, Kalamitsi and Sivota village. The island’s main resorts, however, take up the east coast of Lefkas. Nidri, being a former fishing village, is the biggest settlement. Today, it has combined all the best of the modern and traditional – sailboats join the fishing boats off the sandy shore, and family friendly restaurants, cafes, and bars have opened up alongside authentic fish taverns. About 7 miles north, Nikiana is almost the same, but on a smaller scale. If looking at astonishing examples of Greek architecture is more suited for you, then you should visit Nydri, the medieval Venetian castle of Agia Mavra and the prehistoric city of Nirikos. Aside from those few examples, Lefkas has plenty more monasteries and archeological sites to visit which will leave all history lovers in awe. If you are more interested in having an active holiday, the island itself, together with its surroundings, has a variety of things to offer. Numerous activities such as sailing, windsurfing, cycling or scuba-diving are just a thought away from doing on this gorgeous island.
